Andy Sutton Suspended 8 Games

The NHL suspended Edmonton Oilers defenceman Andy Sutton eight games on Saturday for charging Carolina Hurricanes forward Alexei Ponikarovsky.

The incident occurred in the third period of Edmonton's 5-3 loss to Carolina on Wednesday night. Ponikarovsky was skating the puck out of his own zone when he was hit into the boards by Sutton. Sutton got his hands and stick up into the head of the Carolina player on the hit, and was assessed a boarding minor on the play.

The suspension is the third of Sutton's career. He was banned five games earlier this season after an Oct. 28 hit to the head of Colorado's Gabriel Landeskog. He also drew a four-game ban in 2005 for another hit-to-the-head incident while he was with the Atlanta Thrashers.
