Tyler Seguin Signs Entry Level Contract with Boston

BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins have signed forward Tyler Seguin, the second player taken in this year's NHL draft.

Financial terms of the three-year, entry-level announced Tuesday deal were not released, but it was reportedly in the neighbourhood of contract No. 1 overall draft pick Taylor Hall signed with the Edmonton Oilers that will bring him US$900,000 a year with bonuses that could bring it to a total of $3.75 million.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli noted that the negotiations were relatively uncomplicated because of the slotting for rookie contracts. After watching Seguin go through the development camp, the team decided it was ready to commit.

"We felt it was time to sign Tyler," Chiarelli said.

Seguin, 18, and Hall tied for the Ontario Hockey League scoring title with 106 points.

Seguin was honoured as the outstanding player in the OHL last season after scoring 48 goals with 58 assists in 63 games. In two seasons with the Plymouth Whalers, he had 69 goals and 104 assists in 124 regular-season games and 10 goals and 16 assists in 20 post-season games.

Chiarelli said that Seguin, who played centre in juniors, fits in best at wing right now on the Bruins. Boston already has four centres in Marc Savard, David Krejci, Patrice Bergeron and newly acquired Gregory Campbell.

"But you never know," Chiarelli said. "I've had discussions with (coach Claude Julien) about mixing and matching."

Chiarelli said the team was ready to proceed without buying out any players.

"We have the ability right now to ice a team, and it's a good team," Chiarelli said. "It's a roster that I'm very happy with right now. There are some spots for some young players to earn spots."
