Daniel Briere Suspended 3 Games

Flyers forward Daniel Briere has been handed a three-game suspension for cross-checking Frans Nielson during a game against the Islanders on Saturday night.

The league assessed the ban on Monday morning after a conference call hearing with Briere.

With one minute left to play and the Flyers leading 6-1, Briere cross-checked Islanders centre Frans Nielsen after taking a face-off deep in the New York zone. Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro went after Briere as the Flyers centre skated by the net before Daniel Carcillo stepped in to defend Briere.

Briere, who received a five-minute major for cross-checking and a 10-minute misconduct on the play, said after the game that he was not happy with the way the Islanders were handling the lopsided loss.

"When you get embarrassed like that, there's lots of frustration," Briere said on Saturday. "They didn't like that and had to respond some way, somehow. They did it with their fists."

In what was a nasty affair, the two teams combined for 120 penalty minutes, with 73 of those going to the Islanders.
