Restricted free agent Marc Staal and the New York Rangers have agreed to terms on a new five-year contract extension, just days before the start of training camp.
The 23-year-old defenceman will earn $3.975 million per year, a raise over the three-year, $2.48 million entry-level contract he just completed.
The Rangers' first pick in the 2005 NHL entry draft (12th overall), Staal set career highs with eight goals, 19 assists and a plus-11 rating last season while leading the team in average ice-time, logging a career-high 23:07 of ice time per game.

Internationally, Staal has represented his country in several tournaments, most recently skating with Team Canada at the 2010 World Championship in Germany. He registered one assist and tied for second on the team with a plus-two rating in seven games. Staal also captured back-to-back gold medals with Canada at the World Junior Championship in 2006 and 2007, and was named the top defenceman at the 2006 World Junior Championship.
