The San Jose Sharks have given their captaincy to centre Joe Thornton.

Thornton, who was a captain with the Boston Bruins, takes the job over from the retired Rob Blake.  Head coach Todd McLellan also announced that defenceman Dan Boyle will be a permanent alternate captain, while forwards Patrick Marleau and Ryane Clowe will split the other alternate captaincy on a home and road basis.

The 31-year old Thornton has a streak of seven consecutive 20-goal and 50-assist seasons.
