MINNEAPOLIS -- The Wild have signed centre Mikko Koivu to a seven-year contract extension that could keep the franchise centre in Minnesota through the 2017-18 season. The team made the announcement on its website Thursday. According to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the deal is worth $47.25 million. The average salary cap hit is $6.75 million, and the package includes five signing bonuses and a no-trade clause. The deal is the richest in the history of the franchise. Koivu was selected as the Wild's first permanent captain in October and is considered the cornerstone of a franchise that has very little depth behind him at centre. Koivu had 22 goals and 49 assists last year for the Wild. General manager Chuck Fletcher called it "a milestone day in the history of the Minnesota Wild." |
